So yeah! Adam here. I was on the air (again)! You may remember that back in July of last year, I was interviewed by Jared Goodell, who is the host now of the Jared Goodell Show on Morning Talk Radio on Manchester’s WFEA-AM 1370.
So yesterday, Jared sent me a message via twitter ask me to come back on his show:
“Hey Adam! Hope you are well! Here in NH several school are debating transgender bathroom policies at schools and it is a hot topic. Would you be invested (I think he meant ‘interested’) in coming on the air with me one day this week between 7a-9a EST to talk about this issue from the transgender point of view?”
The interview went well, though it was brief. While I don’t appreciate that he insists upon using the inaccurate phrases “born as a girl”/”was a girl” and while I did not want to enable his playing devil’s advocate around the issue of who exactly is sexualizing children in this debate, overall ~ as a host, Jared is respectful ~ no baiting, no name calling ~ which provides me with a forum for trans issues that I can feel ok about, especially because I can reach a much more conservative base than I could ever hope to speak to on my own or via more liberal, LGBTQ-friendly outlets.
I did not like what he did with the whole thing after I was off the air. I mean, I don’t need my ego stroked. Thanks for complimenting ME because he “can have a real conversation” with me, but what a slap in the face of the entire transgender community by essentially implying we are all a bunch of whiners for wanting equal rights!! And he twisted my words around in re: being ok with some trans kids using a staff or gender neutral bathroom. Ah well, ALL media folks in his vein are spin doctors. can’t control what they do with your words once you put them out there.
At any rate, he keeps calling on me to be his go-to transgender representative, which I don’t mind at all. We wrapped it up with an agreement that he could contact me for future shows. My mood around this is, hey, I am a diplomat at heart, and there may be a few people in his audience who we can actually reach with our message that yes, we are “normal”, we are harmless, we are just like everyone else ~ wanting to live our lives in peace and to thrive without the fear of harassment or violence.
Here is the episode. My segment starts at 1:29. You can click on the time bar once you start the podcast to navigate there, unless you want to listen to the whole 2 hour episode.
